OMG...SHEisDOPE: Chrystel
Reigning from the Ivory Coast, Chrystel, is "dangerous" and "rare," plus, her music is nothing but vibes. She's currently working on her EP RARE, which will be released in a few months.
She jokes that she started singing in her mother's womb, although not that early, it wasn't too long after. Everyone around her recognized her voice and Chrystel realized that not everyone could sing pleasantly. That's when she knew that she had the juice.
When Chrystel isn't singing, she's repurposing/designing clothes that she found from thrifting. She has a clear vision of what she wants to look like on stage and on sets.
Q&A with Chrystel
Q: So, you just had a show at the Masquerade. What was it like?
A: It was so good! The sound system was amazing! The lights, everything was perfect. But, I faced a lot of challenges that day. The pants to my outfit ripped. I had to throw together a whole new outfit an hour before show time and show up through the adversity of a few technical difficulties. It turned out to be an amazing show with a great turn out. I love the Masquerade, I can’t wait to play there again.
Q: iHeartRadio...how did that interview come about?
A: It’s actually crazy because I was looking over my goals list on the 1st of February. Being on iHeart with DJ Scream has been on my list since before November of last year. I literally had no idea how I was going to do it, but I decided it was happening, and it did. I got a phone call on my birthday, January 3rd, and I was in there the next day.
Q: Who would you love to collab with?
A: Oh, man. So many people! Right now, I would love to collab with Rick Rubin, Frank Ocean, Stromae, Kendrick and Tame Impala. I would love to write with SZA and Banks. There are so many dope women killing shit right now. I want to collab with all of them.
Q: Who’s your biggest supporter?
A: MY MOM. What a woman! My producer and right hand BigPapito supports everything I do. There’s a lot of people online who follow me pretty closely, which is amazing and unbelievable. This is why I cannot wait to tour! Shout out to ya’ll.
Q: What’s your spirit animal? 🐾🐾
A: Everyone I know would say a feline of some sort; a panther or cheetah, which is probably true. I move fast, I’m very impatient and I know what I want.
Q: Biggest pet peeve?
A: When you’re the only girl in the room and a guy walks in and acknowledges everyone except you. They always come back like, “Oh, shit! My bad you’re so dope blah blah blah,” but it’s too late. At that point, they’re already on my 💩list 🤣🤣🤣
Q: Love or lust? 💕
A: Both. Love with a layer of lust. But mostly love, the world needs more love.
Q: What are your goals this year?
A: As always, I have a WHOLE list of things I have to accomplish this year. My biggest goal is always to grow as an artist and touch as many people as possible through music. I need to travel the world and perform everywhere this year, though. I want to tour most of the year for the next 10 years.
Q: Any hidden talents?
A: I’m pretty good at drawing. I have a nice artistic eye. I love to put things together that other people would not put together, almost like a puzzle. I also can tell you a lot about a person by their initial energy. I have yet to be wrong lol.
Q: What is music to you?
A: Music is everything. I honestly don’t know if I'd be here without it. Corny, but true.
Q: If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
A: I want to be everywhere, truly. If it’s not music related then in Cote d’Ivoire or Paris with my extended family. I don’t get to see them very often.
Q: What was your favorite subject in school?
A: I loved different subjects depending on the year and school. Music/choir, dance, art, math (when i was younger), and English. So..everything haha. But I think the public school system needs work, and teachers need to be paid more.
